| 206 | The Pastor's Pen -- Feed My Sheep!
A flight from Chicago to Los Angeles was boarding. On an ambulance litter, an attendant carried a 245-pound man as the last traveler to board. As they cradled him into a seat in front of us, it was evident he was totally paralyzed from his shoulders down. He was strapped in tightly, but as the pilot taxied to the runway the centrifugal force lunged him to the right, causing him to fall toward the next seat. The stewardess again propped him up in an upright position. Hastily, we were airborne. Beverages were served, then a meal. As I finished the meal, I looked up to the paralyzed gentleman probably 29-years-old, with the meal before him with no one to feed him. My eyes were filled with tears. The hostesses were serving food to all passengers, but here was a person traveling alone who could only look at the meal. It was beautifully prepared, tasty, and far above average for airline food. Before I could wipe the tears from my eyes, I slipped from my seat to his side and inquired if the stewardess would help him eat. He did not know. I asked if I might help him. He responded with, "Oh, thank you, I would be so grateful for your help." As I cut the meal into bite sizes and placed them in his mouth, I felt awkward, conspicuous, but much needed. Before long I was coordinating bites as well as if they were entering my own mouth. He told me of his unfortunate accident, his lonesomeness, his joys, his struggles, his faith and his hope. His name was Dick. Our spirits blended - we experienced sacrament! Upon returning to my seat, my spirit was humbled as I thought of all the people who have had the Good News of the Gospel set before them by the Church. Yes, the supposedly loving and caring Church of God! It’s available, but no one to feed them - crippled with spiritual and psychological paralysis - and no one to feed them. My spirit flowed to the famous words Jesus asked Peter: "Do you love me?" Jesus commanded him, "Feed [not just yourself but] my sheep." John K. Benissan, Pastor | 2007-08-01 00:00:00 |
| 207 | Stewardship Corner
At the time this column is being written it is middle spring and we are into tending our flower beds and nature area. I am amazed at the variety of plants that begin growing around our house. Some of the growth is tulips and mums and other perennial plants that we planted years ago and hope will grow again. Some of the growth is scattered annuals that we planted last year and survived winter. And some growth is weeds. Clover must be one of Mother Nature’s favorite plants because it grows everywhere and nothing much deters it. There is much evidence of robust life just outside our doors and windows. When I am supposed to be ushering I can look out the rear window of our church sanctuary and see the same signs of life. But the beds look well tended, probably by Bob Fedosky and friends. There is also evidence of new life inside our church. God acts like Mother Nature and adds new living possibilities to our congregation. Shakespeare also saw the analogy to gardening in our lives when he observed that our lives are like a garden and our will, the gardener. But in a church congregation there are no weeds to be separated, only new possibilities for growth in our collective stewardship and spiritual life. Each of us needs to be a gardener for God, exerting our will to make our own contribution grow, and to help others blossom as well.
